Welcome all newcomers to the SCA and the Canton of Nimenefeld,
Here is the page you should read if you are new to the SCA. Nimenefeld is a group that is part of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA). The SCA is a medieval recreation group that studies and teaches about pre-17th century Europe. Over 50,000 people all over the world, learning and teaching through a process called "living history". Living History is a process through which you learn history in a more in depth fashion by doing it. If you wanted to learn more about 14 Cen furniture you would wear what the worn, use the tools that they used, cut the wood that they cut, etc. By doing so you get a much more complete understand of how thing were done.
In period the Chatelaine was an assistant to the seneschal (mayor). They acted as the gatekeeper, and would greet important visitors. They were also the keeper of the keys for the castle and estate.
In the SCA the Chatelaine greets newcomers, and helps them to become involved in the SCA by answering their questions, introducing them to other SCAdians that are interested in the same things they are and lend them loaner garb. The badges of the Chatelaine office is a silver key, it is also what the collection of loaner garb is called.
Mor's Handbook - When Baroness Mor the Merry was the Barony of Windmasters' Hill Chatelaine, she put together a Newcomers handbook that is quite good. The book has an overview of what the SCA is about and an introduction to the culture. Every newcomer should have one.
Nimenefeld Email list - If you would like to join the Nimenefeld Email list please email Lady Elspeth Macalpin and she would be happy to add you to the list.
